Rebec

From the mountains of Cantabria, we are bringing you the raw sound of medieval Taverns right in your DAW!

The rebec is a 1-to-5 bowed stringed instrument from the Medieval era and early Renaissance that was typically played by professional minstrels and musicians at feasts.

We sampled a unique-sounding “rabel” (a spanish rebec) built more than 30 years ago in a remote village over the mountains of Cantabria, according to 3 centuries of oral tradition and craftsman’s teachings. There’s just a primal enchantment crafted into this 2-strings rebec: body made of raw wood, lamb skin that requires sun every now and then in order to sound properly and a bow made with horse hair.

Requires full version of KONTAKT 5.6.8 or above (not compatible with Free Kontakt Player).

  1. Igor Butorsky (verified owner)

A surprisingly rich-sounding sample library, and a rarity for such a very niche folk instrument. Going for a most reasonable price-point, at that. With generously lavish articulation and ornament keyswitch assignments, to boot. I was indeed very pleased with how relatively life-like and convincing that this emulated instrument is scripted, considering its overall “bare bones” minimalism in terms of taking up little hard drive space and an ultra-low/virtually non-existent CPU demand. In other words – a good bang for the buck.

Granted, it’s rather lacking in even more robust features such as deep round-robins, but it would be unfair to demand such additional robustness for the mere peanuts in asking price.

So why did I rate it 4 stars instead of 5, you might ask? Well, as soon as I started taking this virtual Rebec through its paces, I was shocked to discover that this sample instrument was programmed with a non-active pitch bend wheel, by default! I mean, what self-respecting sample instrument designer leaves pitch-bending functionality non-active especially for a BOWED instrument??? Note-sliding is a most essential technique for playing a bowed instruments. To leave that out is like designing an automobile with a non-functional steering column. (No turning left or right, just going straight.)

To be fair, perhaps the programmer simply overlooked it. Possibly an innocious oversight. And, of course, the end-user can MANUALLY dive into the instrument’s editing panel (accessed by the little “wrench button”), then assign pitch-bending on their own via pull-down modulation options after selecting “group edit.” Hence, this can be remedied without too much effort. However, not every Kontakt library customer knows how to immediately do this, right out of the gate of getting into Native Instruments products. It requires a bit of a learning curve and some experience. The bottom line is that pitch-bending capability should be a bare-minimum given. Therefore, please get this fixed and updated, oh dear creator(s). With all due respect, as this is constructive user input. Thank you!
