The Instrument Panel

When you first open an instance of “The Container” from any of the provided .nki instruments you will see this tab, which contains three sub-panels as follows:

MIXER PANEL – The default opening panel, this contains all of the following mixer/microphone controls:

  • Microphone Purge/Load –  Turns the 10 available microphones on/off
  • Microphone Faders – Set the microphone levels from silent to +6db
  • Boost Buttons – Gives the individual microphone a +6db boost
  • Mute & Solo Buttons
  • Pan Knobs

INSTRUMENT VIEW PANEL – A 3D representation of the container with the following features:

  • Offers an indication of where you play on the instrument.
  • Allows you to rotate the instrument in 3D left and right.

OPTIONS PANEL – Here you can select from extra special features that give you more fine control over the performance and output characteristics of the instrument:

  • Round Robin/Sample Options – This defaults to RR’s which can be cyclic or completely random. When the Granulator is activated these will be automatically turned off, however you can turn them on again manually to give yourself some more texture options.
  • Sample Playing Mode – This option allows you to choose whether the whole sample is played regardless of whether it is released when the key you are pressing is released.
  • Limiter Switch – Activated by default to prevent high peaks when using the Granulator.
  • Global Presets Menu – These presets affect the entire instrument, modifying controls on every panel to allow you to quickly and strongly change a base sound.
  • Routing Options – Define the routing output for each microphone.
  • Envelope Controls – ADSR & Intensity controls.

FX Panels & The Tuning Panel

“The Container” comes complete with a powerful FX section that will allow you to mangle and manipulate the base sounds in a number of creative ways.

The FX panel is divided into three logical sub-panels for ease of use – Distortion, Filters/EQ and Delay/Reverb. You will quickly discover just how easy it is to take one of the base sounds and turn it into something uniquely yours!

FX PANEL 1 – DISTORTION

  • Lo-Fi – Designed to “dirty up” your sound, the controls available for this effect are Bits, Sample Rate, Noise level, Noise Colour & Gain
  • Skreamer – Combining saturation and distortion, controls available for this effect are Tone, Drive, Bass, Bright, Mix & Gain

FX PANEL 2 – FILTER / EQ

Low pass/High pass filters – These are standard filters with individual controls available for both in Cutoff & Resonance

Solid EQ – The EQ section includes a number of ways to control the frequency content of individual sounds including:

  • Individual Gain and Frequency knobs in the following bands: Bass, Low Medium, High Medium & Treble.
  • You can further refine this in the Bass and Treble sections using the EQ Bell buttons, or in the Low Medium and High Medium sections using the Fine Tune knobs.
  • There is also a Gain knob to control the overall output level of the EQ section.

FX PANEL 3 – DELAY / REVERB

  • Delay – Designed to let you create interesting stereo effects and move your sounds around in space this section contains controls for the following: Time, Damping, Pan, Feedback, Dry & Wet Controls

Reverb – Here you can choose from 16 different high quality reverb types that will instantly place your sounds in a completely different environment. You can also individually adjust aspects of any of them:

  • Reverb types includeRooms, Halls, Stadiums, Cathedrals, Churches, Basements & Early Reflections
  • Fine controls include – Pre-delay, Room size, Wet & Dry Controls

TUNING PANEL

The Tuning panel allows you to individually and precisely tune the keys of an instrument in any way you please and gives you a number of tools to achieve this:

  • Tuner Preset Menu – Choose from a number of presets including Stairs Up, Stairs Down, -/+ 12 semitones, -/+ 24 semitones, Random Narrow & Random Wide.
  • Semitones Tuner – You can change the tuning from -60 to + 60 semitones here and the buttons will highlight when you play the corresponding note on the keyboard for easy reference. 0 =  original note.
  • Fine Tuning Panel – Each note can be tuned from -600 to +600 cents (a tritone).

The Granulator Synthesiser

Probably the most interesting and powerful tool in “The Container”, the Granulator Synthesiser rewards the time invested in it by transforming your sound way beyond your wildest expectations. It comes with a whole bunch of incredible tools to help you achieve this.

  • Granulator Presets Menu – Choose from over 20 presets that will give you an instant idea of just what the granulator is capable of.
  • Microphones Purge/Load – Switch microphones on and off here dependent on the needs of your particular sound.

Grain Parameters

  • Grain Speed – Sets the grains frequency of repetition
  • Grain Attack – Sets the attack duration of each grain
  • Grain Size – Sets the grains duration
  • Source Range/Source Random
  • Velocity Range/Velocity Random
  • Pitch Range/Pitch Random
  • Speed Range/Speed Random

All of the above controls can be assigned to any one of the available 5 LFOs.

LFO Controls – Choose from any of the following in the 5 individual LFO sections.

  • Wave Shape – Choose from 12 predefined shapes or create and assign your own from the Table Editors (see below)
  • Frequency Control
  • Amplitude Control

Each LFO can be assigned to any knob on the Granulator and even to other LFOs frequencies and Amplitudes, which can create some very interesting modulations!

  • Wave Shapes Table Editors – You can create your own wave shapes on any of the 5 tables for use in the LFOs.
  • LFO Synchronization On/Off – Defines whether an LFO keeps going through its cycle or stops when you release a key on your keyboard.
  • Tuner Modes – These buttons define how the Tuner Panel interacts with the Granulator. Mode 1 = Tuner processed before Granulator, Mode 2 = Tuner processed after Granulator.
  • Wave Shape Indicator – Simply outputs an image representation of the LFO wave shape as you select them.
